Vitamins as a Weight Loss Supplement: Is it True?

Statistics show that more than 60% of the American population is considered overweight, and that every year almost half of it vows to lose weight. No wonder why fad diets and nearly all available diet programs are popular.

But do you know that dieting can actually reduce the amount of nutrients you receive each day? Most people tend to eat less whenever they want to lose weight, and this means less nutrient intake.

Get Skinny Quick-Reason 6 Why You Are Not Losing Weight

The last reason why you may not be losing weight is pretty contrary to what we are used to hearing.

Here it is: you may need to ditch our workout buddy.

I know, it sounds harsh, but it's true! Becky Marquez, Ph.D, a researcher at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, says that "Partners observe the other's eating and exercise habits and alter their own behavior to match."

So, if your workout buddy decides to skip workout and indulge too frequently in unhealthy snacks, you are likely to follow!

Dr. Marques suggests that if you have to convince a friend to join you on a diet or to get on a exercise regimen, they are not ready.

She further suggests that if your potential workout buddy is ready, you can sit down with them and discuss eating and exercise goals. If you guys can't get on the same page, remain friends and choose another workout buddy!

Get Skinny Quick-Reason #5 You're Not Losing Weight

The get skinny quick tip today is interesting. It has to do with how eating slowly can actually INCREASE weight in some situations. I have to admit I have never heard explained in this way.

Anyway, according to a review from the "Proceedings of the Nutrition Society", people take in 40-70% more calories when dining with family and friends.

"People tend to eat more when they're in pleasant surroundings" says Collin Payne, assistant professor to marketing at New Mexico State University. It seems socializing in places like a restaurant or dinner party causes us to lose track of how much we are eating.

The suggestion is to have a strategy in place for social situations such as whether you will have a slice of bread or a dessert. You also can order an appetizer instead of a main entr'ee.

Get Skinny Quick-Reason #4 Why You Are Not Losing Weight

I have to admit that I have done what today's post is all about! I know I am not alone when it comes to why some of us aren't losing weight.

Reason #4 Why You Are Not Losing Weight: You go to the gym or do some other type cardio outside no matter how tired and beat you are.

This happens because many of us have heard that it's better to burn a few calories than none at all.

The truth is, it is more beneficial to d rop your workout if you are exhausted says Alejandro D. Chediak, MD. It seems that when we are sleep deprived, hormonal level changes which can trigger cravings for sugars and starches.

Another reason to ditch the workout is because you may not be able to workout at the same intensity level.

The recommendation from Dr. Chediak is to get at least 7 hours of sleep and schedule your workouts earlier in the day.

So, the lesson here, ditch the workout if you are exhausted!

Get Skinny Quick: Reason #3 Why You're Not Losing Weight

Hey,

are you ready for reason #3 of the 6 reasons why you are not losing weight? The first two reason were pretty easy to fix weren't they?

Reason #3: You Make Your Own Meals

I know, this is a rather strange one. While it is good to make your own meals, if you are not vigilant, you can put on extra pounds because of things like picking at and eating food while you make a meal, adding extra butter and oil to dishes, nibbling on leftovers, etc.

The way to fix this is to simply use measuring cups and spoons while you make your meals. This way, you will know for sure how much of everything you actually are using. A food scale can also be helpful for items that can't be measured in a measuring cup.

Also, when you do eat, use small portions and save leftovers in small ziploc bags. This will ensure that you aren't eating too much.

So, do continue to make your own meals, but just be extra vigilant about not snacking and eating small portions!

Get Skinny Quick-Reason #2 Why You're Not Losing Weight

Today's get skinny quick post is a follow up from the previous one.

We have been talking about 6 surprising reasons you are not losing weight. This information was gathered from the March 2009 issue of Shape magazine.

Yesterday's tip had to do with loading up on the right whole grain foods.

Today's tip has to do with how allowing yourself a cheat day or two is not good.

When anyone denies themselves, they set themselves up to fail and binge. So, they then figure they will be "good" during the week, and ease off on the weekend.

In reality, folks who do this actually gain back the little bit of weight they may have lost during the week because of their weekend choices. This is because every calorie counts.

So, instead of going crazy on the weekends, a few days a week allow yourself a 150-200 calorie treat.

I think any of us can do this right?!

Get skinny Quick-6 Suprising Reasons You Are Not Losing Weight

I recently received the March 2009 issue of Shape magazine.

There was an interesting article that listed a number of reasons people do not lose weight, especially those last 5-10 pounds, in spite of doing things like eating wholesome foods, hitting the gym, etc.

I thought I'd share over the next few posts what the article covered.

#1: You are loading up on whole grains and still no luck. Many people rid their pantries of snacks made with white flour, and replace then with whole-grain versions. It seems the problem is many of these can still be high in fat, sugar, and sodium.

So, the suggestion was to switch up your strategy. It has been found that the people who eat the greatest number of servings of minimally processed whole-grain foods-NOT snack foods like crackers, cookies, and chips, enjoy the biggest weight control benefits according to research.

The suggestion was to increase your intake of o brown and wild rice, bulgur, oatmeal, spelt, quinoa, plus whole-grain breads and cereals.

These foods contain lots of fiber which helps curb your appetite and also are low on the glycemic index.

    How to Travel and Stay Fit!

    Just because you are a busy person with lots to do everyday, it doesn't mean that you don't have time to stay fit and keep in shape while traveling. Excuses do not keep you fit and in shape and able to keep up with the demands of your busy life. If you are a member of a health club it would benefit you greatly if you ask the club if it participates in any programs that offer privileges at other facilities. Guest passes to certain spa and athletic clubs are sometimes free for one day.

    If your hotel does not have arrangements with a club near your hotel, the hotel that you are staying at just might. Asking at the front desk may open your eyes to many possibilities for a workout away from home and you will find out exactly what your options really are. Lots of hotels at least have treadmills or similar machines, which are much better than simply laying in bed and watching TV during your stay.

    When traveling just remember that almost every town has a YMCA or YWCA. Locate the yellow pages in your hotel room and give them a call. Again, there is now no excuse to become a traveling couch potato. Opportunities for you to take care of your fitness needs abound in all of your business and personal travels.

    If necessary you may need to get a little creative, by using your hotel room as the gym of the day. Exercising in your hotel room is an easily and very convenient way to make certain that you get in your work out without missing a beat. Before you leave for your trip pack some collapsible hand weights or elastic exercise bands or other equipment that is made for travel, and turn your hotel room into the indoor gym that it has the potential to be. Elastic bands are great for getting resistance without lugging around big old dumbbells everywhere you go. Use the chairs and other pieces of furniture to your advantage to satisfy all of your fitness needs.

    Body weight exercises are enough for a great workout. Combine crunches, pushups, and legups. You won't exercise a large variety of muscles using only body weight, but you will at least be able to work on your heart and your endurance.


    It's understandable that working out is not as easily done when you are in route to your next destination, so if your time is extremely tight and you don't have time for a complete work out. There are other alternatives to not working out at all. Stretch in your room, take a long walk. I bet the hotel is just as nice on the other side of the pool. Speaking of pool, you could always take a swim. Swimming is definitely a workout that will work every muscle in your body. With all of these ideas for a good work out, if not the best work out that you've ever had, you should no longer have any excuse for not continuing your fitness routine while traveling.

    Just remember that it doesn't really matter where you are when you do your work out but that you do your work out where you are. And if you can't do the exact routine that you are useful, just take solace in the fact that you are getting a workout.

    Start by leaving behind fast foods. Foods like pizzas, McDonalds, etc are way too greasy and fatty. Instead, eat more fruits and veggies. They are good for your overall health.     Now, you need to combine your new diet with a workout program. Cardiovascular exercises are the way to go. They will make you sweat lots and help your muscles get toned. A great example of a cardio exercise is jogging. But using the treadmill. Why? because on it you can incline the machine to have a more intense and harder workout. That will make your muscles work harder, allowing them to burn more fat and calories than if you went jogging on the streets.

    Get Skinny Quick-6 Proven Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

    One of ways you can boost your efforts to get skinny quick is to reve up your metabolism.

    You may have heard that if you boost your metabolism it will help you lose weight and burn more calories.

    So since weight loss is your goal you just might be interested in these six ways you can boost your metabolism.

    1. Eat more green leafy vegetables. Dark green leafy vegetables like arugula, collard greens, dandelion greens, kale, chard, and spinach are full of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, and lots of fiber. These vegetables are packed with loads of antioxidants and they are so healthy for you, but what really helps you increase your metabolism is the fiber content in these vegetables. Your body is going to burn a lot more calories because of the work it takes to digest the fiber in these foods.

    2. Drink ice cold water. Here is something that many people are not aware of; when you drink ice cold water your body has to heat the water to body temperature before it can be processed! Therefore you can burn more calories in any given day simply by drinking cold water! So next time you have a glass of water, make sure you drink it ice cold!

    3. Eat 5-6 small, healthy meals throughout the day. Normally your body will horde calories as there are relatively long gaps between meals. However, eating small amounts more regularly throughout the day will encourage your body to naturally burn calories and body fat more quickly as your body knows it will be fed more often.

    4. Do interval cardiovascular training. A number of studies have shown that doing intense physical exercise followed by a period of rest is more effective at inducing fat loss than simply training at a moderate intensity for the same duration. Doing interval training creates what is called 'after-burn' - following interval training your body burns at a higher rate than it would normally, thus burning more calories and naturally speeding up your metabolism.

    5. Eat more fruit. Whole fresh fruits have actually been said to have "negative calories." this means that your body will burn more calories digesting the food than it stores from eating the food. To ramp up your metabolism you may want to try adding fresh fruits like blueberries or strawberries or bananas to your cereal or your smoothies every morning.

    6. Eat spicy foods, chilies, and curries. Have you ever eaten a spicy meal and felt your body break out in a sweat? The capsaicin in many hot peppers and other spices literally fire up your metabolism due to the "fire" it creates inside your body. Some studies have said that there is a 50% increase in metabolism after eating a spicy meal that contains capsaicin. So you may want to keep a bottle of hot sauce on your table and add it to your dishes at meal time.

    If you follow these tips, you will find it much easier to achieve your weight loss goals and get skinny quick!

    Today's Tip: Prep for Exercising in Winter

    Exercising in winter brings a few challenges, namely staying warm and comfortable. With a little preparation, you can enjoy walking and other outdoor activities when the temperature drops. Remember these tips for exercising in winter:

    • You should always cover any exposed skin when it's really cold, including your hands and head. Mom was right -- you'll lose a lot of body heat if you leave your head uncovered.

    • Choose clothing fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin to keep dry. (I love the About.com Walking Guide's picks for plus sized tops.) Keeping your skin dry is important; moisture conducts cold air toward the skin and keeps heat away from it.

    • Consider wearing a few layers of lightweight clothing rather than a heavy coat over a single layer. Wearing multiple, lighter layers will actually keep you warmer than one or even two heavy layers. (Our About.com Walking Guide provides some great cold weather walking and clothing advice, too.)

    • You hear a lot about drinking enough water in the summer, but that advice is vital year-round. It's still important to drink plenty of water before and during your workout to stay hydrated even if you don't feel hot or thirsty.

    • Some days, no matter how much you prepare, old man winter is just too tough to beat. Do an exercise video or go mall walking if your gut tells you it's just too cold or windy to be outside.

    • A side salad is an excellent way to include veggies with a fast food meal. They're easy on the wallet, too. Just be sure to watch out for high-fat toppings like regular dressings, bacon bits, cheeses, etc. If you know your salad comes with these items, ask them to be omitted. Always order your choice of light dressing on the side so it's up to you how much you use.

    • If you're going to order from the regular menu, keep portion control in mind and stay away from oversized items such as double cheeseburgers or foot long hot dogs. One of my favorite eateries offers "double" fries for a 49 cents upgrade. It may sound like a steal, but treating yourself to oversized fast food will up-size your waistline in no time.

    • Believe it or not, a pizza shop can be diet-friendly. A salad bar with lots of fresh veggies is often on offer. You could also have pizza in small servings if you're smart about the toppings. Vegetarian pizza is a great choice. You can also request less cheese be used on your pizza. Try thin crust; it has less carbs and calories than thicker crusts. Better still, split a slice with a friend!

    Get Skinny Quick-Smart Super Bowl Switches

    Well, today's the big day for all you football fans out there. If you are working to get skinny quick, the super bowl diet can mess things up!

    If you are looking for smart super bowl switches that will keep you on track today, follow the tips outlined below!

    Smart Super Bowl Switches

    The spread at Super Bowl Sunday doesn't have to spell diet disaster. With a few smart switches, you can enjoy a few treats without your scale scoring any points.

    • Diet Foul: Hot Wings from Dominos Pizza

      I understand from my sports-minded friends that Super Bowl Sunday is all about wings. At 45 calories and 2.4 grams of fat each, just six wings from Dominos Pizza add up to a total of 270 calories and 12 grams fat. (My friend James says a dozen is the typical minimum consumed -- you do the math.) Pigskin or not, if you're watching your weight while you're watching the game, drop those wings until pigs fly.

      Diet Touchdown: Tyson Grilled Chicken Strips with Frank's RedHot Hot Wing Sauce

      Instead of winging it, stick toothpicks in a 3-ounce serving of chicken strips and dip them in a dollop of hot sauce. You'll enjoy a similar flavor for 125 calories and 3.5 grams of fat, a savings of 145 calories and 8.5 grams of fat. (Tip: If you really want a chicken fix, an Original Recipe drumstick from Kentucky Fried Chicken has 140 calories.)

    • Diet Foul: Pizza Hut Full House Extra Large Meat Lover's Pizza

      Word has it pizza is also a perennial pigskin favorite. And my sources say the more meat, the better. But just one slice of this jumbo-sized, meat-laden pizza packs in 370 calories and a whopping 20 grams of fat. (Play a game of touch football after a couple slices of that sucker!)

      Diet Touchdown: Pizza Hut Large Fit'N Delicious Lower Fat Pizza with tomato, mushrooms and jalapeno peppers

      At 140 calories and four grams of fat a slice, you could eat three slices for around the same calories as one slice of that previously-mentioned meat monster. But since the veggies will make this one more filling, it will be easier to stop at just two. If you order pizza at another chain, go meatless, and ask for less cheese and lots of veggies.

    • Diet Foul: Submarine Sandwich

      What could be easier than picking up a sandwich on the way home to watch the game? Easy, yes. Diet-friendly, no. A typical submarine sandwich from a delicatessen or your grocery store's deli provides about 19 grams of fat and just under 500 calories.

      Diet Touchdown: Subway Sandwiches 6-inch Turkey Breast and Ham

      Hit your local Subway instead of the supermarket and this six-inch sandwich will serve up nearly half the calories (290) and less than a third of the fat, at five grams per sandwich.

    • Diet Foul: Heluva Good French Onion Dip

      As the name implies, if you are a chips and dip fan, this is a mighty tasty selection. But it packs a heck of a waistline wallop -- just two tablespoons adds 60 calories and five grams of fat to those chips you know you probably shouldn't be eating in the first place.

      Diet Touchdown: Fat-Free Sour Cream and Hidden Valley Ranch Dip Mix

      Add just a sprinkle or two of ranch dip mix to two tablespoons of fat-free sour cream for a still-tasty (but admittedly, not very creamy) dip. (Tip: If you like a thicker consistency, consider using reduced-fat sour cream. It will still save you about 20 calories a serving.) For non-fat varieties, you'll only take in about 25 calories per two-tablespoon serving.

    • Diet Foul: Lays Classic Potato Chips

      Greasy... crunchy... potato-y! What could be better than mowing through a big bowl of chips as your team scores its first touchdown? Munch your way through two ounces (about 44) chips and you've tackled about 300 calories and 20 grams of fat in one sitting.

      Diet Touchdown: Rold Gold Classic Pretzel Sticks

      You still have to have something salty and crunch, right? The same serving size of pretzels will save you 200 calories. Better still: They're fat-free.

    • Diet Foul: Regular Beer

      One can or bottle of the typical regular beer has about 117 calories. Guzzle down a six pack and, well, it ain't pretty: That is 702 calories, the equivalent of about four 3-ounce T-bone steaks.

      Diet Touchdown: Light Beer

      If the Bowl just isn't the Bowl without your beverage of choice, at least switch to light beer. It'll only save you about 20 calories a serving. But if you're still considering a six-serving session, it will save you a grand total of 120 calories. But remember, at 99 calories a serving, you'll still be downing just under 600 calories after the switch. (Tip: Say no to the buzz and yes to diet soda and save hundreds of calories.)
